Woman, what have I to do with thee?

JESUS’ FIRST MIRACLE - WATER INTO WINE

Reference: John 2:1-11

Jesus, His disciples, and His mother was called to a marriage in Cana of Galilee. It is not stated whose wedding they were attending, but Mary, Jesus’ mother seems to have been involved in helping to care for the many guest. It is stated that when the guest wanted more wine, the mother of Jesus came to him and said, “They have no wine.” Jesus said unto her, “Woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not come yet.” In effect Mary is suggesting that Jesus do something about the lack of wine. She then turns to the servants and says, “Do whatever He tells you.”

No one except Jesus’ mother, the disciples, and the servants who filled the pots with water knew the origin of the wine. The wine must have indeed been very good because the governor of the feast who tasted the wine asked the groom why he didn’t serve the best wine first.

“My hour is not yet come,” what did Jesus mean? I can only conclude that Jesus was on a divine timetable. So, He wasn’t going to reveal His power sooner than the Father intended (see John 5:30). Jesus did act, performing His first miracle. He turned the water into wine, but He did so in a subtle, subdued way. Only the servants, Mary, and a few disciples knew what He had done. The miracle was to introduce the disciples to His ability, not to show off or to go public with His power (see John 2:11).

The result of this beginning of miracles: His disciples believed on Him (John 2:11).
