JESUS’ RESURRECTION

Reference: John 20

Jesus predicted His resurrection three times in the Gospel of Mark (8:31, 9:31, 10:34), that after His death He will “rise on the third day.” All four Gospel accounts record Mary Magdalene present at the empty tomb the morning of the resurrection (Matthew 28:1, Mark 16:1, Luke 24:10, and John 20:1).

On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and several other women went to the tomb with spices they had prepared to anoint Jesus’ body. They wondered how they would roll away the stone placed in front of the tomb, but when they arrive the stone was rolled away. When they went inside, they did not find Jesus’ body. Suddenly two angels in dazzling white clothes appeared. The women were terrified, but the angels said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here. He has risen! Remember how He told you that He would be turned over to sinful men, be crucified, and rise again on the third day?”

The women ran back to tell Peter and the other apostles what they had seen and heard. Peter and another apostle went to the tomb to see for themselves. They looked in and saw the linen cloths that Jesus’ body had been wrapped in but nothing else. They went home, amazed and confused.

But Mary Magdalene stayed outside the tomb crying. Suddenly she saw Jesus standing there, but she did not recognize Him for she thought he was the gardener. Jesus said unto her, “Woman, why do you weep? Who are you looking for?” She replied, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” Jesus said unto her, “Mary.” She turned and recognized Him, (Mary recognized His voice) and said, “Master!” Jesus said unto her, “Do not touch Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father, but go to my brethren, and say to them, I ascend unto My Father, and your Father, and to My God, and your God.”

Note: There is a hidden message here. Mary recognized the voice of Jesus. Why? Because she had a relationship with Him. When a loved one or beloved friend calls you, you recognize their voice. If there is a relationship with Christ, one will recognize the voice of God. Jesus said “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). (John 10:4-5), Jesus said “My sheep know My voice, and a stranger they will not follow, but will flee from him, for they know not the voice of strangers.”

Mary Magdalene ran to the disciples where they mourned and wept. She told them she had been with Jesus, but they believed her not.

Later that day Peter and another disciple walked along to the country when Jesus appeared to them in another form so they did not recognize Him. As they talked with Him about all the things that had happened suddenly they recognized it was Jesus that they walked with then He disappeared. They went and told the others but they did not believe them.

Later as they sat to eat the evening meal, Jesus stood in the midst of them, and said, “Peace be unto you.” And He showed unto them His hands and His side. The disciples were so happy to see the Lord!

When Jesus’ appeared and ate with the disciples in the house Thomas was not with them. The disciples told him they had seen the Lord! But Thomas replied, “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

Eight days later Jesus appeared to His disciples again and Thomas was with them. Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here in my hands, reach out your hand and put it into my side. Be not faithless, but believe!” Thomas answered and said, “My Lord and My God!”

Jesus said, “Thomas, because you have seen me, you now believe, but blessed are those that have not seen, and have believed.”

I believe!

Jesus was with them yet forty days after His resurrection, and there are many, many, other things which he did, but if all that He did had been written, John says the world itself could not contain the books should they have been written (Acts 1:3; John 21:25). But these things were written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, (that’s you and me). And that by believing we might have life through His Name. What Name? JESUS!

After forty days, while Jesus was with the eleven, he commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which He said, “you have heard of Me. For John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days from now…. You shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you…” (Acts 1:4, 5, 8).

And when He had spoken these things, while they looked on, Jesus was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they stood there looking toward heaven, two men in white appeared and said, “You men of Galilee, why do you stand there gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you in to heaven, shall so come in like manner as you have seen Him go into heaven.”

Oh! what a glorious day that will be!
