QUESTION #10 Why call me Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Read Luke 6:17-49 KJV:
Why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? (Luke 6:46)
WHY DO YOU CALL ME LORD?
Reference: Luke 6:46-49; Matthew 7:21-29, 25;11
As Jesus comes to the end of a sermon in which He has been teaching, He drives home the necessity of obeying what He has taught. He asks pointedly, “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not the things which I say?” Then He concludes with a parable of two men building separate houses. Jesus said whoever comes to me and hears my sayings, and does them, I will show to whom he is like. This man digs deep and lays a foundation on a Rock (Christ), so that his house stands firm when the floods burst against it. But, he that hears, and does not do Jesus’ teachings is like a man that foolishly builds his house without the proper foundation, so that it is destroyed by the flood.
In the parable, the foundation is obedience to Christ’s teaching. The second man heard Jesus’ teachings but did not do them. He agreed with it by the fact that he calls Jesus “Lord”. But he did not obey Jesus’ teaching, resulting in tragic loss.
Obedience to Christ is “obedience to the faith” (Romans1:5, 16:26). Faith in Christ is the source and basis of obedience. You will not do what your Lord says if you do not believe what He promises. As an example, Jesus says, “The one who believes and is baptized shall be saved, but he who does not believe shall be condemned” (Mark 16:16). A person who does not believe what Jesus promises is not going to obey Jesus in baptism, so that unbeliever is condemned. Faith (belief) is the basis and cause of obedience. When a person has real faith (belief), they act upon that faith. They hear and do what Jesus teaches. They are obedient to the Word.
In this age of tolerance and rejection of absolute truth there is a widespread belief that anyone who is sincere in their faith will go to heaven. A person can be sincere, but be sincerely wrong. These people foolishly build their house upon the teachings of false teachers, or what they believe in their heart, and do not build their house upon God’s Word. We must read (hear) and obey God’s Word.
On four different occasions, Jesus spoke about people who would cry out “Lord, Lord” yet not be received into His kingdom. First, note that Jesus is NOT talking about believers. Whenever Jesus used the phrase “Lord, Lord,” he was talking about people who don’t know Him:
· In Matthew 7:21 and 22, “Lord, Lord” is the pleas of the self-righteous who brag about all they’ve done for the Lord only to find their works count for nothing.
· In Matthew 25:11, “Lord, Lord” is the cry of the foolish and locked out virgins.
· In Luke 6:46, “Lord, Lord” is said by those who have not built on the solid foundation.
· In Luke13:25, “Lord, Lord” is uttered by those who refuse to enter in at the straight gate.
True believers act upon their faith, a person has to do more than just believe. If a person really believes something they will act upon that belief. For example, you believe fire is hot, so therefore you will not stick your hand into a flame.
One can give Jesus lip service and say they love Him, but how does one show that they love Him? Jesus says, “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments: and His commandments are not grievous (severe or heavy)” (1 John 5:3). In Luke 6:46, Jesus is saying if you call me Lord, you will do the things I say. Jesus says the ones to enter into the kingdom of heaven are those that do the will of the Father which is in heaven (Matthew 7:21).
Sadly, in that day, not everyone that says, “Lord, Lord” will enter into the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 7:21). The Lord will say, “I never knew you. Depart from me, you that work iniquity”. The word iniquity means “violation or transgression of the law (commandments), unrighteousness, or wickedness”. So, in other words, Jesus is saying, “I never knew you. Depart from me, you that did not keep my commandments.”
Those that do not keep God’s commandments do not love God nor do they know Him; therefore, He never knew them.
