QUESTION #14 Who touched Me?
QUESTIONS JESUS ASKED BIBLE STUDY
Read Luke 8:43-48 KJV:
Who touched Me? (Luke 8:45, Mark 5:30)
WHO TOUCHED ME? THE WOMAN WITH THE ISSUE OF BLOOD
Reference: Matthew 9:20-22, Mark 5:25-34, Luke 8:43-48
A woman with an issue of blood had just touched Jesus, He turns to the crowd surrounding Him and asked, “Who touched Me?”
The woman had suffered twelve years from being ritually unclean. She had spent all she had with doctors trying to find a cure. Her condition was not only physically debilitating, but it disqualified her from marriage (Leviticus 20:18), as well as a religious life in general (Leviticus 15:25-33). This meant she was unable to live a normal life, and was in a sense dead to the people around her. Strictly speaking, she should not have been among other people. She could not go out, she could not touch members of her family, she could not enjoy a normal life. Anyone or anything she touched was unclean.
She could not throw herself, therefore, at the feet of Christ and state her complaint. She was unclean. But, however, she was a woman of faith, as she made her way to Jesus through the crowd, she thought, “If I may but touch the hem of his garment, I shall be whole.” It was a risky decision. Exercising faith means you must be willing to take some risk. She reached out her hand and touched the hem of his garment. That was all it took. She didn’t have to speak to Him, she didn’t have to tell Him what it was she needed, she just had to have enough faith to reach out to Him.
As soon as the woman touched Jesus’ garment, He felt that “virtue had gone out of Him,” and He turned and said, “Who touched Me?” As soon as the woman realized she was healed she tried to hide back into the crowd. When she seen she could not hide from the Lord she “came trembling” and fell at Jesus’ feet, and bore testimony to the crowd of the miracle that had happened to her.
Jesus said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made thee whole, go in peace.” Daughter was an endearing term for Jesus to use. Some tender insight of His own must have prompted Him to use it. He was letting the woman and the crowd know she was healed, and clean, she could go in peace.
Due to the greatness of the crowd, it took determination and desperation for this woman to press through the mass of people to just simply touch Jesus. He wanted the woman and the crowd to know that His garments had not caused her to be healed, but the strength of her faith.
God doesn’t require us to have unshakable, unwavering, moving mountains kind of faith in order to work miracles in our lives. Sometimes, just like the woman with the issue of blood all we need to do is have enough faith to just barely touch the hem of Jesus’ garment. If we can do that, He then can use His miraculous power on our behalf.
Later in Mark 6:53-56, we read that when Jesus came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to shore, straightaway people knew Him. And they ran about through the whole region bringing the sick upon their beds. And whatever village, city, or country Jesus entered, they laid the sick in the streets so that they might just touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched Him were made whole.
Jesus’ great power to heal was made known to many. The crowds knew. They swarmed Him. They anticipated His next move. They dogged His steps. They brought their sick to Him. Jesus was the one who had the power and they knew it.
The real question is: Do we know it?
Do we trust He has the power to help us in our time of need? Do we believe He still has the power to heal? Do we believe that His power is real, or just a figment of an overactive religious imagination?
I don’t know about you, but I believe!
