QUESTION #30 Salt is good, but if the salt has lost his saltiness, how will you make it salty again?
QUESTIONS JESUS ASKED BIBLE STUDY
Read Mark 9:33-50 KJV:
Salt is good: but if the salt has lost his saltiness, how will you make it salty again? (Mark 9:50)
THE LEAST IS THE GREATEST
Reference: Matthew 18:1-6; Mark 9:33-50, Luke 9:46-48
While Jesus and the disciples were on their way to Capernaum He apparently noticed the disciples having a serious discussion because when they came into the house he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?” But they kept silent, for they had argued with one another about who was the greatest and they knew better than to openly argue about such a thing.
Jesus had been teaching the disciples about the coming of the kingdom of God and they expected to have an exalted place in that kingdom, based on their service to Jesus now. And that expectation was right. As Jesus indicates in Matthew 19:28,“Verily I say unto you, that you which have followed me, …shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
But who would have the highest place? Whose throne would be best? Whose would be next to Jesus? I’m sure these were the kinds of questions coming up among them.
But Jesus sat down and called them to him, He had something to share with them about the true path to greatness - which is very different than what most people in the world think. Jesus told them, “If any man desires to be first, he shall be last of all, and servant of all.” He then took a child into his arms and said, “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but Him that sent me.” Remember in biblical times children were not held in the same high regard as they are today. They had no power or social status. They were on bottom, they were lowly and last.
To receive someone means to welcome them. To welcome them in the name of Jesus is to do so on the behalf of Jesus as His representative, as His servant. Jesus is saying that greatness comes from accepting the lowest social status in order to serve others - in this case a child. You put yourself before the lowly one, so that you can love and minister to their needs. Instead of the lowly one focusing on you and lifting you up, you focus on them and lift them up by serving them. And in serving others you will be serving Jesus and indeed the Father.
Jesus tells them, “Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
Jesus says salt is good but if it’s lost its saltiness then it is useless. What did Jesus mean? There could be several different meanings, salt was used for many things in Biblical times, such as purification (Ezekiel 16:4) or to make a covenant (Numbers 18:19), but I’ll touch upon one that it may refer to. Salt makes the human body thirsty. As Christians we should always be thirsty for more of Jesus. We are supposed to make the world thirsty to have what we have. The unsaved world does not know Jesus through the power of the Holy Ghost (1 Corinthians 12:3), but they do see our manner of life as Christians. What does our way of life say to them? Always remember that you are the only Jesus that someone may know. When they see Jesus in you, they will come to glorify Him! “Let you light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” Matthew 5:16. May our lives reflect the Lord Jesus Christ who lives within us, and when others see Him, they will glorify our Father which is in heaven! If we are salty for the kingdom of God, we can sprinkle that salt on a lost world and make them thirsty for more!
REMEMBER - IF WE HAVE LOST OUR SALTINESS - WE ARE RENDERED USELESS FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD (Matthew 5:13).
How salty are you?
