JESUS’ TRIUMPHAL ENTRY
Reference: Matthew 21:1-27; Mark 11:1-10; Luke 19:29-40
Jesus made His triumphal entry into Jerusalem at the beginning of the last week of His life. This event is traditionally known as the triumphal entry, when Jesus officially offers Himself to the nation of Israel as her long-awaited Messiah.
Jesus had instructed two disciples to go to a neighboring village to find an ass tied with her colt and bring them to Him. This had all been preplanned by God so as to fulfill that which was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass” (Matthew 21:5).
Isaiah 62:11, “Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, His reward is with Him, and His work before Him. “
Zechariah 9:9, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, your King comes unto you: he is just, and having salvation: lowly, and riding upon a donkey, and upon a colt the foal of a donkey.”
To ride on a horse was sometimes an emblem of war; on a mule and an ass, the emblem of peace. Kings and princes commonly rode on them in times of peace, and it is mentioned as a rank and honor to ride in that manner, (Judges 10:4, 12:14; 1 Samuel 25:20). Solomon, when he was inaugurated as king, rode on a “mule” (1 Kings 1:33). Riding in this manner, then, denoted neither poverty nor degradation, but was the appropriate way in which a king should ride, and in which, therefore, the King of Zion should enter into His capital, the city of Jerusalem.
The great multitude following Jesus was not only His disciples but many others, many who had been healed by Him. This is a very triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. Their worship of Him was so great that they removed their garments, and cut down branches from the trees, and put them on the road for the ass and colt to ride over. They followed crying, “Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the highest!”
Jesus then entered the temple, where He cleansed the temple for the second time and healed the blind and the lame who came to Him. Jesus is praised by children in the temple after healing the blind and the lame, they cry out, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” The chief priests and scribes were very displeased, and said, “Do you hear what these (children) are saying?” Jesus points out that what is occurring was prophesied in Psalms 8:2 and asked, “Have you not read?”, ‘Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?”
Psalms 8:2, “Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightiest still the enemy and the avenger.”
In the last days, the people of God again await the triumphal entry of the Messiah. King Jesus will once again enter Jerusalem. This time He is coming not as the unrecognized Lamb of God, but as the triumphant returning King with the armies which are in heaven following after Him (Revelation 19:11-16). Not only will Jerusalem behold His coming but also the eyes of everyone on planet Earth.
Most of the people living on Earth will be taken by surprise at this next triumphal entry, just like those in Jerusalem two thousand years ago. Some, however, were ready and waving palm branches in anticipation of His coming.
Are you ready for His return? Will you be among those to line the highway with palm branches and cries of praise?!
