QUESTION #41 Know ye not what I have done to you?

QUESTIONS JESUS ASKED BIBLE STUDY

     Read John 13: KJV:

*  Know ye not what I have done to you? (John 13:12)

JESUS WASHES THE DISCIPLES FEET

Reference: John 13

Know ye not what I have done to you? -- This question is asked, not to be answered, but to direct their attention to what He had done, and to the interpretation which follows -- “Do ye perceive what I have done? This is the meaning of it.”

The question comes shortly after Jesus performed the task of a lowly servant: washing the feet of His own disciples.

When Jesus came to Peter to wash his feet, Peter couldn’t imagine that He would let the Son of God wash his feet! He said, “thou shalt never wash my feet!” Jesus told him, “what I do now you do not understand, but later you shall know.”

Jesus went on to tell Peter, “If you do not allow Me to wash your feet, you have no part with me.” Peter then said, “Lord, wash not only my feet, but my hands and head also!”

As with many of Jesus’ teachings, full understanding will take the disciples some time to reach. In this case, however, the lesson is not mysterious or complex, Jesus will continue by pointing out that servants are not above their masters. If the Master acts in love and service to others, those who follow are obligated to do the same. The point is not about literal washing of feet, but an attitude of humility and self-sacrifice. Christians are never “to big” to love and serve others.

Jesus didn’t teach just with words. His life was a conscious example lived before his disciples and recorded in the Gospels for us. Two crucial truths that Jesus’ life teaches us are how God lived as a human and how we should live as humans. Our challenge is not just to know the words and deeds of Jesus’ life. We need to understand those words and deeds as something from God as he lived among us and then incorporate those words and deeds into our own lives. Jesus’ life calls us to follow in His footsteps!

Jesus said, “Happy are those that do them!”
