QUESTION #43 None of you ask Me, whither thou goest?
QUESTIONS JESUS ASKED BIBLE STUDY
Read John 16:1-16 KJV:
None of you ask Me, whither thou goest? (John 16:5)
JESUS PROMISES TO SEND THE COMFORTER
Reference: John 16:1-16
Jesus told His disciples there would be a time when they would be put out of the synagogues, and that there would come a time there would be those that would kill them thinking that they were doing God a service. He explains that they will do these things because they didn’t know Him nor the Father. He tells them I’m telling you these things now, and you will not remember, but there will come a time you will remember.
Jesus then turns to them and ask, “I say I will now go back to Him that sent Me, but none of you have asked Me, ‘Where are you going?”’
Jesus has just told the disciples something that shocked and upset them greatly. They were filled with sorrow. They were told that the very One they had followed for 3 ½ years, the One that had been their Teacher, their Guide, and for the One whom they had left everything -- was now about to leave them. Can you imagine how upsetting that piece of news must have been to them? Truly they didn’t understand, but later they would.
Jesus explained it was necessary that He go away in order for the Comforter to come to them. He said if he did not go the Comforter would not come, but when He went away that He would send Him to them. Jesus said when He, the Spirit of Truth, the Comforter comes, He would guide them into all truth and show them things that were to come. He assured them, in other words, that though He was leaving them, it wasn’t for good. It was only for a little while. And He promised He would return for His people, and that they would live with Him forever!
This is Jesus’ promise of the present and ongoing ministry of the Holy Ghost in the lives of His followers on earth. Not just to the disciples, but to all believers in Christ. What a wonderful promise this is! How important it is that we understand it!
(Ezekiel 36:27) “And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My statutes, and ye shall keep my judgements, and do them.”
(John 14:26) “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My Name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance what things I have said unto you.”
(John 15:26) “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of Me.”
(John 16:13) Howbeith when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come.”
(John 16:7) “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you.”
(John 14:16) “And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever.”
(John 14:17) “Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”
(John 14:18) “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
(John 14:20) “At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in Me, and I in you.”
Let me ask you - would you like to have God not just with you but in you forever? You can have the Comforter, the Holy Ghost dwell within you, to teach you all things, to guide and help you. It’s God’s free gift to all those that love Him and follow His commandments. Acts refers to the Holy Ghost as power! You can be filled with power to overcome this world just as Jesus did.
(John 7:37-38) “Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst let him come unto Me and drink. He that believeth on Me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
(Acts 1:8) “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto Me… and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
How can you receive this promise?
(Acts 2:38-39) “Then Peter said unto them, repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For this promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.”
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:4)
One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. (Ephesians 4:6)
Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? (1 Corinthians 3:16)
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? (2 Corinthians 13:5)
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me… (Galatians 2:20)
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world. (1 John 4:4)
Is God just with you, or in you?
