QUESTION #45 Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?
QUESTIONS JESUS ASKED BIBLE STUDY
Read John 6:70 KJV:
Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? (John 6:70)
THE ONE WHO BETRAYED JESUS
Reference: John 6:70
Jesus called and chose twelve men unto him to be His apostles: Simon (whom He also named Peter), Andrew (Peter’s brother), James and John (brothers whom he called “the sons of thunder”), Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James (the son of Alphaeus), Simon (called Zelotes), Judas (the brother of James), and Judas Iscariot (the traitor) (Luke 6:13-16).
From the moment Judas Iscariot planted a kiss on Jesus Christ he sealed his own fate. He is remembered as h istory’s most famous traitor. By identifying Jesus to the Jewish authorities, this betrayal set into motion the series of events that became the foundations of Christian faith: JESUS’ ARREST, HIS TRIAL, HIS DEATH BY CRUCIFIXION, AND RESURRECTION.
Judas went to the priests of the temple and offered to betray Jesus in exchange for money -- 30 pieces of silver. Judas was an immoral man even before satan entered into him. He kept the “common purse,” the fund that Jesus and His disciples used for their ministry, and stole from it (John 12:6).
Whatever his motives, Judas led soldiers to the Garden of Gethsemane, where he identified Jesus by kissing him and calling him “Master.” When Judas saw that Jesus was condemned he immediately regretted his actions and returned the 30 pieces of silver to church authorities, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” The chief priests and elders dismissed him, saying, “What is it to us?” Judas threw the coins to the floor, then left and hanged himself.
Why did Jesus keep Judas with Him knowing he would betray Him? Jesus said that all must be done to fulfill the scriptures (Matthew 26:56). When Jesus knew His hour had come that he should depart out of this world, He loved them unto the end, that included Judas (John 13:1). After the last supper (Passover meal) was ended, Jesus arose and washed His disciples’ feet, and by lowering Himself before His disciples to wash their feet, Jesus made Himself the servant of all, Judas included.
The gospel of John says that Jesus “was glorified” at the moment he gave His love to Judas, when He loved him without gaining anything by it and beyond all measure (John 13:31).
In the darkest night of resentment and hatred, Jesus manifested the unbelievable radiance of God’s love.
